Low Tide Local is about

CONNECTING THE
SANTA CRUZ COMMUNITY

Low Tide Local connects Santa Cruz County neighbors with the local events, businesses, and weekend plans worth leaving the house for.

About Low Tide Local

We're Makena and Price, the two people (plus three small assistants) behind the email in your inbox every Tuesday morning. The whole thing runs on three ideas:

  • Building community
  • Connecting people
  • Supporting local businesses

PLENTY HAPPENS IN SANTA CRUZ. IT'S JUST SCATTERED.

OUR STORY

We're a local family with three kids on the Eastside, and we kept finding out about cool things in Santa Cruz after it already happened. A new business opening that we'd find out about a few weeks after the fact, or a street fair or concert we'd miss. We found ourselves checking different websites and Instagram accounts to find things going on, but we'd still miss things.

We had the thought that it would be nice to have everything in one place. So every Tuesday we started looking up everything going on around town and write up the handful of events we'd want to go to ourselves. We sent it out to some friends and family who loved it, so in June 2026 we opened it up to the rest of the county. We posted about it on Nextdoor and in a few Facebook groups, and in the first week nearly 1,800 neighbors joined the list. We were not expecting that!

This has turned into something we're passionate about and are so excited to continue building, and we see so much potential for helping connect the community and help local businesses.

It's growing quickly, but the core idea hasn't changed. Low Tide Local is a free email every Tuesday morning, built around things we'd take our own family to. If you hear about something we should include, send it our way. We can't include everything but we'll try our best!

About Us

MAKENA (og Santa Cruz local)

Makena and her siblings grew up on Pleasure Point. She spent practically half her childhood in the ocean between surfing and Junior Guards.

When she and Price first started dating, she made it very clear she was going to end up living in Santa Cruz, so Price took note that if he was going to try to shoot for the moon with Makena, he'd have to make Santa Cruz happen too. As you can imagine, he was not upset about either.

PRICE (only local claim is he's married to one)

Price is not originally from Santa Cruz, and we try to not hold it against him. He's a lake boy doing his best impression of a beach dad. He grew up on the East Coast and spent his time skiing, wakeboarding, and wake surfing. After marrying a girl from Santa Cruz, he traded it for the real thing. Ten years in, he's still getting used to sand getting in everything.

THE THREE ASSISTANTS

We have three amazing kids aged 6, 3, and 9 months. As employees they need quite a bit of micromanaging at the moment, but we hope that changes. They are very fun though and are our toughest event critics.
